Multiple concussions result in TBI for former N.F.L. players
Accident & Injury Personal Injury
Summary: This is the case for those N.F.L. players, who, in the heat of battle or out of the machismo expected from football players, ignored the symptoms of concussions and continued playing, oftentimes even after being knocked unconscious.
Imagine going to work every day, punching your time card, heading to your desk, then repeatedly running head first into the wall for eight hours. This is the life of a professional football player, and as the N.F.L. is getting older, so are the players from the earliest years of the league — and we are finally seeing the full effects this kind of job has on the brain. Guess what — it’s not good.
Our Clearwater brain injury attorneys at the Dolman Law Group have constantly emphasized injury diagnoses such as mild brain injuries, or closed head injuries, are not to be taken lightly. The effects can be extremely harmful if not taken care of, especially if suffered repeatedly. Symptoms can linger and be mistaken for a simple head ache. Multiple closed head injures will always lead to a Traumatic Brain Injury, or TBI.
This is the case for those N.F.L. players, who, in the heat of battle or out of the machismo expected from football players, ignored the symptoms of concussions and continued playing, oftentimes even after being knocked unconscious. As a result, many former players have gone on to suffer from the likes of severe depression, dementia, Lou Gehrig ’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, among other severe neurological problems.
In a suit brought against the N.F.L. by over 4,500 former players, they claimed the N.F.L.’s handling of concussions and head injuries suffered on the field of play was fraudulent. They believed there should have been stricter guidelines and regulations regarding head injuries and that the N.F.L. exploited them. A landmark settlement originally capped at $675 million was reached for injury claims by former players. However, a recent preliminary decision was made by U.S. District Judge Anita Brody in Philadelphia has removed the original cap on the settlement, ensuring that players will always be able to receive compensation for treatment if they suffer from or develop a severe neurological disease.
