West Virginia Lawyer
West Virginia entered the nation in 1863. Its State Fish is the brook trout, and the State Gem is fossil coral. WV belonged to VA until 1861, when Virginia seceded from the Union. Declared a state by Abraham Lincoln, it is the only state to be designated by Presidential Proclamation. WV’s mountainous terrain gives it the nickname “the Switzerland of the US.” The first brick street was laid in Charleston.
