What is the Purpose of a Resolution Session?

Under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), there is a requirement for school districts to promptly organize a meeting with parents and pertinent members of the IEP team within 15 days upon receipt of a due process hearing request. This is known as a resolution session and it is aimed at addressing and seeking a resolution of the issue at hand. Resolution session attendance is mandatory, and it gives parents and schools the chance to work together and try to settle a dispute before initiating a due process hearing. After a complaint has been filed, the parties have 30 days to reach an agreement.
