Charles practices general intellectual property law with an emphasis on patent preparation and prosecution in the chemical and pharmaceutical arts. Charles also supports patent litigation and has experience drafting validity and infringement opinions. Charles is sole inventor on two U.S. patents and has 25 years of industrial experience working with a major paper company and a Fortune 50 manufacturing company in the Upper Midwest . Charles has technical experience in the areas of x-ray crystallography, controlled release drug delivery, microencapsulation, polymers, fluorochemical materials, transition metal complexes, medical devices and wound care dressings.
While attending law school Charles was an industrial Intellectual Property Specialist, conducting intellectual property education sessions for clients of mergers and acquisitions and managing international patent portfolios. Charles facilitated interactions between inventors and patent attorneys and also assessed invention disclosures, patents and literature with an eye toward patentability. Charles does pro bono work, advocating for foster children, through the Children's Law Center of Minnesota.
