introduction
It was during law school that I discovered my passion for litigation. For people unfamiliar with the court system, there are essentially two kinds of lawyers: those who sit at desks drafting documents (wills, contracts, etc.) and those who represent you in court when things go wrong. You could think of it as the difference between a carpenter and a firefighter. They both work with wood, but their jobs are very different. For me, the choice was obvious. I fight fires.
Like many, I went to law school to help real people with real problems. After obtaining my law degree, however, I found myself working at a law firm where the clients were multi-billion dollar insurance companies. While I gained valuable trial experience, after two years I knew it was time to move on.
Determined to get back to my original vision, I left my job to found Powell Litigation. The firm was created specifically to help individuals and small to medium-sized businesses with their litigation needs. The rest, as they say, is history.
When I’m not in the office or the courtroom, you can find me on the tennis courts or walking with my wife, Caroline, and our dog, Zoey, on the waterfront in downtown Toronto.
