Questions & Answers
Please describe a case in the last year or two where you made a big difference.
There was a custody case in which the mother came to me with very limited supervised visitation. She was incarcerated at one point, but she had done a lot of rehabilitation and was able to get her life together. Together, we were able to get her full custody for her four children. We were able to accomplish this because she worked very hard and listened to my advice. There was a significant benefit to her and seeing her children run to her was incredibly rewarding.
How did you build a successful practice?
Hard work and doing a good job at putting my client's desires and goals first helped me to build a successful practice. Procedurally, getting there sometimes can be difficult with unexpected hardships, but communicating with your client is important to overcome these obstacles. When other lawyers see you doing well in court, they will tend to refer you cases.
What should clients look for in a lawyer?
Clients should look for an attorney who is responsible, organized, and who communicates with them and will keep their goals and values in mind. A client needs an attorney who will advocate tirelessly for them.
How important is local knowledge to the success of your cases?
It is very important. Each case is completely unique, and each jurisdiction has unique characteristics that clients need to watch out for. That is why it is vital to have a local attorney who knows the ins and outs of each jurisdiction.
What information can you provide in a free phone consultation?
I can provide the procedural aspects of a case, as in what to expect and a general overview of the process. When potential clients first walk though the door, usually they are very fearful of the unknown aspects of the process and it is important to alleviate those fears.
What information do you need in a free phone consultation?
I will need very specific information about your case. For example, in custody cases it is important to bring in any prior orders or the final divorce decree. Each case is unique, but procedural documentation is necessary and vital.
What differentiates you from other lawyers in your community?
My experience. I have over 20 years of experience being involved in the legal system. I started my career as a police officer in Virginia Beach before working as an Assistant Commonwealth's Attorney for Southampton/City of Franklin. Following my work as a prosecutor, I began working as a defense attorney and I have been a practicing attorney for the last 17 years. I have taken a large number of cases and I have been exposed to many types of cases. There is usually not a case that I haven't seen before.
What is the most rewarding aspect of your job?
Accomplishing the goals of my clients.
What are your other interests in addition to law?
I am an avid hunter and fisherman, and I enjoy relaxing at the beach.
Are you involved in your community?
Yes. I am a member of the Western Tidewater Community Service Board, the Courtland Youth Athletic Association, and the Franklin Masonic Lodge,
