"The initial contact with Jim was very positive. He was on time, listened to our requests and what we wanted done. We did all the demo, to save money, so the estimate he gave us was within reason. Jim and his crew were supposed to begin work the Saturday before Spring Break. We delayed it until the following Monday to give us more time to finish the demo. Come Monday, there was no Jim. We contacted Jim and he informed us he was running late on another job and would start Tuesday. Tuesday comes and he and his crew mate (also named Jim) arrive and get to work. They put in a full days work and we were very impressed. However, that quickly came to a halt. In the days that followed, we saw Jim maybe an average of 8 hours. Jim communication was and has been terrible. We were constantly having to touch base with Jim to find out when he was going to show up. On the days he said he would be there, he'd show up late, do a few hours worth of work and leave. We had to delay the job due to my girlfriend coming down with the flu. On April 7th, she sent Jim a text letting him know she was better and the job could resume. No response from Jim. Another text was sen on April 8th, and no response from Jim. I finally called him on Saturday. He didn't pick up. Called him again and again he didn't pick up. Conveniently, he responded to my girlfriend saying he'd be there on Sunday at 9 to start the tile work. Up until now Jim has put dry wall, textured the wall, installed a new bathroom fan, and a recessed light above the shower (it's supposed to be flush, but it's protruding out). He also put up some pink water resistant barrier where the shower is to be. Sunday morning comes and I have a feeling Jim isn't going to show. I send him a text asking if he's still on schedule to arrive at 9 and he says he may be a late because he was on another job until 2am. I tell him no worries and we can shoot for a start time between 11 and 12 to which he agrees. 11 o'clock comes and no Jim or text/call. 11:30 and still no Jim and no text or phone call. 12 o'clock and still no Jim and still no text or call. 12:30 comes and I try to call him. Three times my phone call goes to voice mail. On my last call I left him a message firing him. Our master bathroom is still not done and we're out $1800 for shoddy work. The $1800 was because he asked for an advance on the payment so he could buy supplies. We found a handyman who has since taken over the project and is having to go back and tear everything down that Jim did and start from new. The shower drain was not centered so it'll have to be re-done. The shower handle sticks too far out from the wall so that will have to be redone. The texture on the walls will have to be sanded down as will the textured ceiling. Our new contractor is so concerned with the shoddy work Jim left behind that he's going back and checking the wiring Jim and his crew did to make sure it was done properly. Jim is very nice and he'll tell you that no job is too small or too big for him, but that's not the case. Having had Jim in our house, I warn you to not make the same mistake we made. If you hire Jim, have him draw up a contract explaining what he's going to do, provide a time frame of when he will have the job completed by, and monitor everything. I honestly think Jim was doing work he had no knowledge of, for example the shower drain he installed. Do not give him any money until the job is complete. Everything that Jim did in our home is having to be re-done because we trusted him to know what he was doing. We essentially gave him $1800 because all the work he did is having to be re-done."
